Chapter Three

Betting on Myself

From Printing Press to Real Estate Success

A collapsed lung. A doctor's warning. A phone call to his wife. And a decision made in a print shop that changed everything. The story of how Brian went all-in on himself — with no notice, no safety net, and no room to fail.

When you're considering a major life change, like buying or selling a home, it can feel like you're taking a huge risk. I understand that feeling all too well.

My journey to real estate wasn't a straight path, and it involved taking one of the biggest risks of my life. Let me share that story with you because I believe it illustrates why I'm uniquely qualified to guide you through your own life-changing real estate decisions.

The Printing Press Years

Fresh out of high school, I dove head-first into the world of printing. It wasn't just a job for me — it was a skill I had honed during my high school years. For nearly a decade, I worked diligently in a print shop, believing I had found my lifelong profession.

But life has a way of throwing curveballs when we least expect them. In the early part of 1993, I started experiencing frequent respiratory issues. At first, I brushed them off as minor inconveniences, but they gradually became more severe and more frequent.

A Wake-Up Call

Then came the day that changed everything. I was at work when suddenly I felt a sharp pain in my chest. My breath became labored, and I knew something was seriously wrong. I was rushed to the hospital with a collapsed lung.

During a follow-up visit, my doctor delivered news that would alter the course of my life. He looked me in the eye and said, "Look, if you want to see 40, you might want to consider a job change."

Those words hit me like a ton of bricks. This was all I had ever done. It was my livelihood, my identity. How could I just walk away from it? But the reality was stark: my health, my very life, was at stake.

At that moment, standing in that print shop, I decided to take a page out of my dad's book — but instead of betting on something I couldn't control, I was betting on the one thing I knew I could: myself.

A Leap of Faith

This moment of crisis became a catalyst for change. I started thinking about what else I could do and what other skills I might have. That's when I remembered my fascination with real estate.

I decided to dip my toes into the real estate world, starting part-time while still working at the print shop. It wasn't easy juggling both, especially as my health was still a concern. But I was determined to make it work.

The Turning Point

As I started to find some success in real estate, I noticed a change in my work environment at the print shop. My boss seemed to be getting frustrated with my divided attention. His actions made me realize that I needed to make a choice. I couldn't keep straddling two worlds. I needed to bet on myself and commit fully to this new path.

One day, I called my wife from work. When she confirmed that her job was stable, I made a decision that would change our lives forever. I quit my printing job on the spot. No notice, no safety net. I decided to go all in on myself and not give myself any room to fail.

Betting on Myself

Now, you might be thinking, "Brian, that sounds incredibly risky. How could you just quit your job like that?" And you'd be right to ask that question. It was a huge risk. But here's the thing: I knew I had to do it.

At that moment, standing in that print shop, feeling the weight of my health concerns and the promise of a new career, I decided to take a page out of my dad's book. But instead of betting on something I couldn't control, I was betting on the one thing I knew I could: myself.

The Power of Self-Belief

This wasn't just about changing careers. This was about believing in myself in a way I never had before. It was about recognizing my own worth and my own potential and being willing to fight for it.

And you know what? That bet paid off. Not just financially — though I'm proud to say I quickly became a top agent in my company and in the entire State of Pennsylvania. But it paid off in ways I couldn't have imagined when I made that leap. Eventually, my wife quit her 9-to-5 job to work from home as my assistant, which has allowed us to optimize our family time together.

I found a career that not only didn't threaten my health but also gave me new life. I found a purpose that aligned with my deepest values — helping people, solving problems, and making a real difference in people's lives.

From Printing to Property: The Skills That Transferred

You might think that printing and real estate have nothing in common. But you'd be surprised. Many of the skills I honed during my printing days have served me well in my real estate career.

In printing, precision is key. One small mistake can ruin an entire project. This attention to detail has been invaluable in real estate, where overlooking a small clause in a contract or missing a minor issue in a home inspection can have major consequences.

Printing also taught me the importance of meeting deadlines. In real estate, timing is just as crucial. Whether it's submitting an offer, scheduling inspections, or closing a deal, being prompt and reliable can make all the difference.

But perhaps the most important skill I brought from printing to real estate is problem-solving. In the print shop, we'd often have to find creative solutions on the fly. This ability to think on my feet and come up with innovative solutions has been a cornerstone of my success in real estate.

Building a Reputation

In real estate, your reputation is everything. I knew that if I wanted to succeed, I needed to build a reputation for honesty, hard work, and results. So that's exactly what I set out to do.

I treated every client like they were my only client. I answered calls at all hours, went above and beyond on every transaction, and always put my client's interests first. It wasn't always easy, and it often meant long hours and sacrificed weekends. But it was worth it.

Word started to spread. Clients began referring their friends and family to me. I started getting calls from people I'd never met who had heard about me from someone else. In my first year, I helped 87 clients realize their real estate dreams, which earned me the Century 21 Advantage Gold Rookie of the Year award. Since then, I've earned annual client satisfaction awards, hundreds of five-star reviews, and client testimonials.

Why This Journey Matters to You
